How Does a Chemical Gas Scrubber Work? 

The working principle of a chemical gas scrubber involves passing the contaminated gas through a scrubbing medium, either a liquid or solid, which interacts with the pollutants and removes them from the gas stream. This chemical interaction can absorb, dissolve, or neutralize harmful substances, rendering them less dangerous. 

There are two main types of chemical scrubbers: wet scrubbers and dry scrubbers. Wet scrubbers use a liquid, usually water or a chemical solution, to capture and neutralize pollutants, while dry scrubbers rely on a solid material, such as a sorbent, to absorb or react with the contaminants.

Differences Between Wet and Dry Chemical Scrubbing 

  • Wet Scrubbing: In wet chemical scrubbing, a liquid solution (often water mixed with specific chemicals) is sprayed onto the gas stream. The harmful chemicals either dissolve in the liquid or react with it to form less toxic byproducts. Wet scrubbers are especially effective at removing gases like sulfur dioxide (SOâ‚‚), ammonia (NH₃), and certain volatile organic compounds (VOCs). 
  • Dry Scrubbing: Dry scrubbers use a solid substance, such as an alkaline material, to interact with the pollutants. The gases react with the dry medium, which absorbs or captures the contaminants, and the waste is then removed as a dry byproduct. Dry scrubbers are commonly used in processes where water isn’t feasible, or where the pollutants don’t easily dissolve in liquids.

Chlorine Scrubber 

Chlorine scrubbers are essential for controlling chlorine gas (Clâ‚‚), a highly toxic and corrosive substance used in many industrial processes. In chlorine scrubbers, a caustic solution such as sodium hydroxide (NaOH) reacts with the chlorine, neutralizing it and removing it from the gas stream. 

Amine Scrubbing 

Amine scrubbing, often used in natural gas processing and refining industries, removes hydrogen sulfide (Hâ‚‚S) and carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚) from gas streams. This process uses a solution of amines that react with acidic gases, capturing them and preventing their release into the environment.
